Demographics

Hermon’s population boom is one of the community’s greatest achievements. Since 2000, the Town of Hermon has witnessed a 26% increase in its population. While most communities in Maine are experiencing a population decline, Hermon is defying this trend. Between 2010 and 2013, Hermon was one of only two communities in the Bangor area to witness a significant population increase. Additionally this population growth has brought in residents with higher incomes and levels of education.

The current population of Hermon is not only defying statewide trends through its rapid growth, it is also attracting younger residents than most Maine communities. At 43.5, Maine’s median age makes it the oldest state in the nation. Hermon, however, currently has a median age of only 40.0; this makes the community more demographically aligned with states like Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The Town of Hermon will have to continue to monitor its changing demographics over the coming years. Data from the 2010 and 2014 American Community Surveys indicates that some residents are leaving the community after their retirement. This may be a contributing factor concerning Hermon’s recorded low median age. Another reason for a reported declining average median age is that young families working in central Maine choose Hermon to build a home because of low taxes, quality schools and good recreational programs. The two factors taken together explain Hermon’s surge in residential population growth which have increased demands on Hermon’s municipal structure during the last ten years.

Population

Hermon’s population is expected to increase through 2032, as projected by the State Planning Office (SPO) to total 7,292 persons, an increase of nearly 31% from 2012.   A large portion of the influx in population for the Town of Hermon has been incoming new residents migrating from other communities.  The town recognizes the potential for increased business opportunities and participation in local government, but also recognizes the potential demand upon town roads, facilities and services when considering infrastructure.  As the town moves forward in understanding its potential future growth rates, the opportunity exists for Hermon to take advantage of this growth period if long range planning is part of its Strategic Economic Development Plan.
